JUDGING AMY: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The pilot episode in this drama about Amy Gray, a single mother who moves back home with her mother to take a job as a superior court judge in Hartford, Connecticut. She must balance her workload with family life, including the joys and trials of dealing with her daughter Lauren and mother Maxine. As the program opens, Amy almost oversleeps on her first day of work. Arriving at the courthouse, she meets her court-services officer, Bruce Van Exel, and takes the bench for the first time, not really familiar with the procedures of being a judge. Almost immediately, Amy calls a recess as Lauren is sick and must be retrieved from school. Upon returning to work, Amy meets supervisor Jack Overby, who welcomes her to the courthouse. Later, Maxine cooks a big family dinner for Amy, Lauren, Amy's brothers Peter and Vincent, and Peter's wife Gillian. Maxine's mothering makes the meal a little tense, and Amy feels further stress when her ex-husband calls to talk to their child. At work, Amy is faced with tough cases; specifically, she tries to stick to her guns in attempting to place a neglected child with a family member instead of in foster care, much to the dismay of the social worker on the case and other colleagues. Amy continues to feel frustrated by Maxine's interference in her daily life, although she opens up to Vincent about the collapse of her marriage. At work, Bruce warns Amy to beware of Jack, and in the neglect case Amy discovers that the child's grandmother is still alive. The program concludes as Amy gives a motherly pep talk to Lauren and is sworn in as a judge. Commercials deleted.
