LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: ENDURANCE {ELEVENTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. This episode investigates a blaze that kills a severely handicapped child, Ian Parnell. His mother and devoted caretaker, Megan, escapes unharmed with no damage to her bedroom -- and with evidence of paint thinner, the material used to start the fire, on her nightgown. Meanwhile, a new district attorney, Nora Lewin, is appointed to oversee the office and is insistent on convicting Megan with second-degree murder. The greatest assets of Megan's defense are her constant care of her son and her recent investigation of new medical treatments, both of which seem to make it less probable that murder was in her mind. McCoy offers a lesser charge of manslaughter, but Megan's lawyer Barry Peck refuses it and pleads not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. On the stand Megan surprises everyone with her recollection of the incidents of the night in question, leading even McCoy to trust his emotions over his legal logic. Commercials deleted.
