DAVID FROST SHOW, THE {ORSON WELLES; LOUIS ARMSTRONG} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of talk/variety shows hosted by David Frost. In this edition, Orson Welles fills in as host. Welles opens the show, relating an anecdote about the first opening he ever did -- as "the voice of corn starch" on a radio show on which he had to read a Robert Browning poem. Welles then moderates a "teach-in" in which selected audience members share information on a certain topic. First, George Epstein updates Welles on the changes in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the town in which both Welles and Epstein were born. Rachel Towne then discusses the Women's Liberation Movement, focusing in particular on the generation of women's-liberation advocates who fought for women's suffrage and on the issues concerning the movement today. Welles says that he thinks women are superior, not equal, to men, and Towne replies that women are seeking only equality. Next, two construction workers, Arnold Law and Tom Owens, tell Welles the story of the recent clash between a gathering of protesters and a group of people who wanted to fly the American flag in the area in which the group was protesting. The altercation resulted in violence and bloodshed. Owens explains that he believes that the flag was being desecrated; Welles and other audience members question the situation and invoke arguments about certain statements Owens makes. This concludes the "teach-in." Welles goes on to introduce guest Louis Armstrong, who sings "Cabaret." Armstrong sits down to talk with Welles and discusses some details of growing up in New Orleans. He also explains that he is taking an herb to maintain his strength and health. Finally, Armstrong sings "Mack the Knife," and Welles compliments the musician on making people more hopeful about being Americans. Commercials deleted.
