TIME TUNNEL, THE: RENDEZVOUS WITH YESTERDAY {UNAIRED PILOT} (TV)

Summary

The unaired pilot of this science fiction/fantasy series about Doug Phillips and Tony Newman, two scientists who become trapped in their own invention -- a tunnel that allows them to travel through time. In this episode, the government is pressuring scientists Doug Phillips and Tony Newman to produce some results in their time-travel research. To keep from losing government funding, Newman decides to test the time tunnel, using himself as a guinea pig. He ends up on the Titanic but is unable to convince the captain that the ship is in imminent danger and winds up locked in the brig as a stowaway. Phillips and the Time Tunnel Team, led by Dr. Swain, monitor Newman's progress on a viewscreen, but they are unable to return him to the present. As time ticks away, and the Titanic sails inexorably toward its fate, Doctor Phillips decides to enter the tunnel himself in an attempt to save his friend and the ship. Once on board, Phillips rescues Newman from his imprisonment, but they fail to stop the collision. As the ship is going down, Newman manages to get an ill passenger, Althea Hall, to a lifeboat before he and Phillips are sucked back into the time tunnel. Dr. Swain and his Team find that they can track the doctors' whereabouts but are unable to return them to the present.
