MIKE DOUGLAS SHOW, THE {CAST OF "SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM," LYNN SHERKOW, GARY CROSBY} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of talk/variety programs hosted by Mike Douglas. Douglas's co-host, Marvin Hamlisch, opens the show with a piano rendition of his composition, "Nobody Does It Better." He talks with Douglas about writing the piece for the film "The Spy Who Loved Me" and about the process of choosing Carly Simon to record the song, after which he accompanies Douglas in Cole Porter's "It's All Right with Me." Douglas's first guest is Lynn Sherkow, advocate from Left-Handers' Rights, a group devoted to helping left-handed people, who discusses being a lefty and demonstrates merchandise designed specifically for those who favor their left hands. Next, Douglas welcomes actress/comedienne Hermione Gingold, who discusses filming Stephen Sondheim's " A Little Night Music" with Elizabeth Taylor and explains her role as the narrator in the current Broadway musical "Side by Side by Sondheim," a revue of material written by Sondheim for previous shows. Gingold introduces the revue's other members -- Georgia Brown, Larry Kert, and Nancy Dussault -- who sing "Comedy Tonight" and "Love Is in the Air," both from "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." Kert continues with "Something's Coming" from "West Side Story," Dussault performs "Send in the Clowns" from "A Little Night Music," and Brown croons "I'm Still Here" from "Follies." The cast then chats about the differences between auditioning in the United States and England, ad-libbing on stage, and the complexities of Sondheim's lyrics and concepts, after which Brown does a brief impersonation of Gingold. In the next segment, the members of British rock group Wishbone Ash perform a number from their latest album, "Front Page News," and Hamlisch clowns around by lip-synching along with them. Douglas's final guest is Bing Crosby's son, Gary, who shares memories of his father, who died recently. The younger Crosby talks about his father's private nature, the experience of recording a hit song with Bing, his parents' views on his decision to enter show business, both his own and his father's alcoholism, and his thoughts about Bing's remarriage. The program closes with the cast of "Side by Side by Sondheim" singing the show's title song, "Side by Side." Includes commercials.
