Summary
One in this series of nightly comedy shows which take a skewered look at current events and feature field stories about any topic. This program, hosted by Jon Stewart, is broken down into different segments and features singer Michael Stipe from the band R.E.M. The first segment, "Headlines," looks at President Bill Clinton's state-of-the-union address as the leader awaits the outcome of the "Impeach/Impediment '99" process, and at the possible effects of the end of the National Basketball Association labor strike on players such as Dennis Rodman and Latrell Sprewell. Next, Stewart offers a correction, a retraction, and an apology relating to comments made on a previous show. After this, Stewart welcomes Stipe to the program. The two discuss the reputation of R.E.M. as a progressive rock band, the musician's feelings about rock and roll after twenty years in the business, and the boost given to the band by MTV. Next, the segment "This Just In" talks about a family's lawsuit against the Bronx Zoo because of the behavior of one of the gorillas, who threw rocks at its members, striking one of the children in the head. After this, the segment "Back in Black" features commentator Lewis Black's coverage of news stories that have fallen through the cracks during the past week. Stewart closes the show with a moment of Zen. Commercials deleted.
