SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {ALEC BALDWIN, LUCIANO PAVAROTTI, VANESSA WILLIAMS} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Actor Alec Baldwin hosts this program, with tenor Luciano Pavarotti and singer Vanessa Williams as guest performers. In the opening sequence, the cast spoofs President Bill Clinton discussing his impeachment and how "very sorry" he is. In the monologue, Baldwin explains that making people laugh has become meaningless to him as it's his eighth time hosting the show. That changes when surprise guest John Goodman appears. Next is a commercial parody for the National Basketball Association on NBC, right in the midst of labor negotiations. Sketches include: a Christmas edition of "Morning Latte" with hosts Tom Wilkens and Cass Van Ryan; a girl with an unusual glandular problem is paid a visit by hospital performer Katy the Klown; Robert Smigel's "TV Funhouse" presents "The Harlem Globetrotters' First Christmas"; and a spoof on long-distance calling commercials. Pavarotti and Williams are joined by the Harlem Boys Choir to sing "O Come, All Ye Faithful." Colin Quinn hosts "Weekend Update" with guest Tim Meadows, who discusses the significance of kwanzaa along with "the Kwanzettes." Next, in an "NBC Special Report with Tom Brokaw" spoof, "O.J. Simpson" makes a guest appearance as a witness at President Bill Clinton's impeachment trial; there is a commercial for a "Chanukah Hymns" compact disc; and three drinking buddies reminisce about a legendary man of Herculean abilities named Bill Brasky (a recurring sketch on Saturday Night Live shows from 1996 to 1998.) Commercials deleted.
