LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: SIDESHOW {PART 1 OF 2} {CROSSOVER EPISODE WITH "HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET"} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. Part one of a two-part crossover story between "Law & Order" and "Homicide: Life on the Street," two separate NBC police dramas. In this episode, a woman's body is found and it appears to be a suicide. However, the autopsy report shows that she was already dead from suffocation before the gunshot wound. The body is identified as Janine McBride, who worked for a government agency in Baltimore. Detectives Briscoe and Curtis contact their fellow detectives John Munch and Rene Sheppard (from "Homicide: Life on the Street") in Baltimore who begin searching for clues into McBride's death. In Baltimore, blood droplets are found in the garage where McBride rented a parking space, which leads the detectives to believe that she was killed there and then driven to New York. McBride's apparent boyfriend is questioned, and it is soon learned that McBride was a lesbian. A letter to an anonymous person is found in McBride's files and Briscoe and Munch head to Washington, D.C., to investigate the possibility that McBride was being stalked. An interview with the stalking suspect leads to the revelation that his wife had had an affair with McBride. The wife, who pleads that her name not be revealed publicly, tells Assistant District Attorneys McCoy and Danvers about a prostitute getting into McBride's car after a night at a club. In a strange twist, independent counsel William Dell subpoenas McCoy to appear before a grand jury in order to reveal his knowledge of this case. Despite his objections, McCoy testifies, but refuses to reveal any information relevant to the case. After the prostitute is located and apprehended, the FBI is brought in and takes over all jurisdiction of the case. As the suspect is being transferred, she is shot and killed at point blank range by Ned Burks, a man who had dated McBride. A phone list is found among the prostitute's belongings, and one of the numbers is to a disconnected cellular phone at the White House. Commercials deleted.
