AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATRE: VINCENT YOUMANS TRIBUTE {RALPH CURTIS, CHRISTINE SPENCER} {EXCERPT} (TV)

Summary

One in this educational public affairs series that traces the origins and development of the American musical theater and examines the careers and contributions of the creative artists who have made the musical a native American art form. In an informal workshop setting, New York City high school students meet the composers, lyricists, and performers who have shaped the American musical and question them about their work. In this, an excerpt from a program devoted to the work of composer Vincent Youmans, Ralph Curtis begins by singing "Time on My Hands." Wrightson explains that like many Broadway composers of the 1930s, Youmans also worked on some of Hollywood's movie musicals. The CBS Orchestra then plays "Orchids in the Moonlight" and "Carioca" from the score of the 1933 film "Flying Down to Rio." Next, Christine Spencer sings the title song from Youmans's last full score for Broadway, "Through the Years," and Curtis sings "Kathleen Mine" from the 1931 musical. The program closes with the CBS Orchestra performing a medley of "I Want to Be Happy" and "Tea for Two."

Cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the GRAMMY Foundation.
