UNITED STATES STEEL HOUR, THE: HEDDA GABLER (TV)

Summary

One in this anthology series presented by U.S. Steel. In this production, adapted from the play by Henrik Ibsen, Tallulah Bankhead plays Hedda Gabler, the beautiful, headstrong, and horribly bored wife of mild-mannered lecturer George Tesman. Hedda is tormented when her secret ex-lover, writer Eilert Lovborg, returns to town. As the story opens, Tea Elvsted arrives at the Tesmond home and confides to Hedda that she has left her husband for Lovborg but fears that one of Lovborg's past loves may come between them. Meanwhile, George worries that Lovborg's return may affect his chances for an appointment at the University and leave him unable to pay his debts. To complicate matters further, family friend Judge Brack recognizes that Hedda is not in love with George and offers Hedda his "attentions." Later that evening, Lovborg drops by to share his new manuscript with George, but while George and Judge Brack prepare to go out for a "bachelor supper," Hedda and Lovborg discuss their feelings for each other. The next morning, George reveals to Hedda that he has found Lovborg's manuscript on the side of the road -- and hasn't told anyone else that he has it. Hedda takes the manuscript and hatches a plot to strike down both Lovborg and Tea in one fiery blow. Includes commercials. Commercials include George Hicks for U.S. Steel.
