ABC MOVIE SPECIAL: THE PRACTICE: THE TRIAL (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about a struggling Boston law practice, headed by idealistic attorney Bobby Donnell. In this episode, Helen investigates the brutal murder and decapitation of a young woman named Cindy Marks. At first Cindy appears to be another victim of the Poet, a serial killer at large, but further evidence shows that a copycat murder has taken place. Cindy's married lover, Dr. Jeffrey Winslow, is implicated in the case, and he gives the law firm a huge retainer to represent him. At first Bobby refuses because he sees a conflict of interest in trying a case against his girlfriend, but he eventually feels that the money and exposure are too important to turn down. Both Bobby and Helen vow not to let the case interfere with their personal relationship, but that agreement gets tested throughout the three-month trial process. Other possible suspects are Marks's mother, Lorraine; Marks's ex-husband, Kenneth; and Dr. Winslow's wife, Karen. Winslow's defense becomes tenuous, however, when he is caught in a number of lies and cover-ups, and Karen has difficulty hiding her feelings of betrayal. Meanwhile, Eugene uses a clever strategy to clear Rebecca's irascible "uncle" Ty of tax evasion charges -- by using a greased pig to his advantage.
