FESTIVAL: WQEW-AM, NEW YORK: STAN MARTIN CABARET
{LIVE BROADCAST} {TAPE 1 OF 2} (RADIO)

Summary

Tape one of two. One in this radio series on New York radio station WQEW, the "Home of American Popular Standards," which features live music, recordings, and interviews with performers in a cabaret-style format. This edition, hosted by Stan Martin and broadcast live from The Museum of Television & Radio in New York, opens the 1998 Radio Festival at the Museum. Martin begins the program with a recording of "The Wheel of Fortune" performed by Kay Starr. Martin's first guest is crooner Tom Postilio, who performs "Gotta Be This or That," "Why Try To Change Me Now?" by Cy Coleman, "Dream" by Johnny Mercer, and "A Hundred Years from Today." Martin then questions Postilio about his preference for recording old songs that are not particularly well-known, the effect Frank Sinatra's work had on him, and his upcoming appearance at the Oak Room of New York's Algonquin Hotel. Next, Liza Minnelli's recording of "New York, New York" is played as is Frank Sinatra's "River, Stay Away from the Door." Following this, Martin introduces Sarah Partridge, who performs "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?," "I Remember You," and Bart Howard's "I'll Be Easy to Find." She and Martin then discuss writer Sidney Zion's glowing review of her work and her upcoming schedule of appearances. Next, Martin plays a recording of "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart" before introducing pianist Roy Gerson, who along with backup of trumpet, bass, drums, saxophone, and trombone, performs a medley of swing numbers. He then talks with Martin about at the Savoy Sunday series at Irving Plaza and the release of his new album. A recording of "You Don't Know Me" is played, after which chanteuse Julie Budd joins Martin and discusses her upcoming Christmas show at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas and her involvement in the upcoming Sinatra conference at Hofstra University. Accompanied by Ken Rizzo on bass and Herb Bernstein on piano, she then performs "This Will Be My Shining Hour," "Put on a Happy Face," and Rizzo's "Little Boy of Mine." After a recording of "Walking Happy," the tape ends with members of the studio audience winning tickets to the upcoming Big Band Dance sponsored by WQEW. Continues with T: 54724.
