DIAGNOSIS MURDER: HARD-BOILED MURDER (TV)
Summary
One in this series of mystery programs about Dr. Mark Sloan, a physician at Community General Hospital who enjoys solving murder cases with the help of his son, Steve, a homicide detective. This episode concerns a twenty-four-year-old murder case, reopened by private investigator Joe Mannix, played by Mike Conners. Clips from the television series "Mannix" serve as flashbacks that illustrate the history of the case. As the program begins, a sniper's bullet grazes Mannix as he finishes reviewing the 1973 murder of reporter Lou Reynolds. While Dr. Sloan says his wounds are not a threat, x-rays reveal that Mannix has a dangerous blockage to the heart. Since he refuses to be treated until he solves the case for Reynolds's daughter, Tina, Dr. Sloan agrees to help. Mannix learns that he was shot with the same gun that killed Reynolds, confirming his theory that the same killer wants to stop the investigation. First, he visits Stella Haynes, the widow of Reynolds's assistant: years ago, she and Reynolds's publisher, George Fallon, schemed to sell taped recordings of an underworld deal. When Mannix and Sloan find Haynes being roughed up by a plainclothes policeman, Eggers, they suspect that she may be blackmailing corrupt cops with leftover tapes. Next, Mannix visits Reynolds's widow, Edie, who is now married to Fallon; she remains distant from her daughter Tina, who links Fallon with her father's death. While questioning Eggers about being under investigation for corruption, Mannix has chest pains and he is rushed to the hospital. Sloan says he needs immediate surgery, but Mannix absconds and follows Haynes on a hunch -- but cannot stop her from getting shot. Upon meeting with Deputy Police Chief Clark Nichols, Mannix accuses him and Eggers of masterminding the murders of Reynolds and Haynes. As a result, a broad investigation into police corruption is launched, and Nichols and Eggers are implicated in the murders. But a visit to Edie leads Mannix to conclude the mystery is far from solved. This program is closed-captioned. Commercials deleted.
