NEWS BEAT: THE HATE THAT HATE PRODUCED (TV)
Summary
One in this series of evening news programs hosted by Mike Wallace. This program features highlights from the five-part series on African-American nationalism. The program includes interviews with political and religious leaders, scenes from Black Muslim and Pan-African nationalist gatherings, and comments by Wallace and interviewer Louis Lomax. Wallace begins by expressing concern about the rise in black supremacy, and cites Muslim leaders Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X as its proponents. Following excerpts of speeches by Muhammad and Malcolm X, Lomax interviews both speakers. Muhammad comments on the failings of Christianity and the ascendancy of Islam as the black man's religion, and Malcolm X discusses the divine nature of African-Americans as taught by Islam and the education promoted in parochial Muslim schools. Also included are excerpts of speeches by Malcolm X, Muhammad, and John Davis of the United African Nationalist Movement regarding African liberation from European colonialism, the hypocrisy of "white liberals," and the negative effects of Christianity on African-Americans. Next are interviews with James R. Lawson, president of United African Nationalist, and Rep. Adam Clayton Powell (D-N.Y.). Lawson discusses his ties with African political leaders and his disapproval of Ralph Bunche and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), while Powell echoes the notion that the church has been detrimental to racial problems. Lomax then interviews a number of Harlem residents about African-American advancement, revealing a general sentiment that the NAACP is not fulfilling the people's needs. Lomax then questions Powell, Lawson, and NAACP Executive Secretary Roy Wilkins about their views of black extremist organizations and leaders. Civil rights activist Dr. Ann Hedgeman points to the societal problems that are fomenting extreme nationalist groups. Wallace and Lomax then remark on the challenges of creating this series.
Addition guests include: Dr. Gardner Taylor, minister of the Concord Avenue Baptist Church and president of the Protestant Council of Greater New York; Arnold Forster, director of the civil rights division of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith; Jackie Robinson, former baseball player and New York Post columnist; and Roy Wilkins, executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The panelists discuss issues raised in the series "The Hate That Hate Produced," including the following topics, among others: the relatively insignificant constituency and power of black supremacist groups; the powerful voice of white supremacy, even in the U.S. Senate; divisions in the Christian church throughout U.S. history on issues of race and ethnicity; the failure of groups such as the NAACP to reach the African-American community at large; Malcolm X's ability to rally large groups of supporters; a threatened boycott by a local Harlem NAACP branch, without the support of the mother organization; the notion of "buying black"; Malcolm X's recent trip to Mecca; and black Muslims' affiliation with the Arab world. Includes commercials.
