FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON: THAT'S ALL THERE IS {PART 7 OF 12} (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:53269. Part seven of this twelve-part docudrama series about the development of the U.S. space program as the country prepares to send men to the moon. Part seven, entitled "That's All There Is," traces the mission of Apollo 12 and the tight friendship forged between the crew of Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon, and Al Bean. During the lift-off of the spacecraft, the navigation system is knocked out, but Bean saves the day by knowing a particular command. As Apollo 11 zooms into space, mission control wonders whether the lightning that struck the spacecraft affected the parachute deploy system, which is vital to survival upon re-entry. But the mood in the spacecraft is upbeat as the crew realizes they are heading to the moon, regardless of the problems upon re-entry. As Conrad and Bean prepared to separate from Gordon in the command module, Bean has a poignant thought about his friend Gordon and leaves it unsaid. But the landing is a challenge because Conrad must land the module on an established target. Once the landing is successful, Conrad and Bean are ecstatic to be on the moon's surface, and with the world watching once again, Conrad chooses fitting words to mark the occasion. But they have problems with the advanced cameras, which are designed to transmit clear pictures from the moon's surface. Having forgotten the detailed instructions for operating the camera, Bean decides to use a hammer to try and improve the picture. After fiddling with the device, Bean has a moment of reflection on the moon and recalls the hardships he endured to get to this moment. As their mission concludes, Conrad and Bean cannot find the camera's timing device in order to photograph themselves. Instead, they commemorate their visit by leaving behind an item that the three astronauts hold dear. Continues with T:53264.
