MIDDAY LIVE WITH BILL BOGGS {TAPE 1 OF 2} {WARHOL
VINTAGE TELEVISION #WA.00.0449} (TV)
Summary
This program was taped off the air with a camera on a
tripod by Andy Warhol for his private research and
entertainment. This program is part of the Warhol
Foundation's donation to the Museum of the artist's
complete television collection. It was taped from
WNEW-TV on 13 March 1979 at 11:30 a.m. Tape
one of two in this series of talk shows hosted by Bill
Boggs. This edition takes the form of a roundtable
discussion over lunch with the following guests:
"Midday" feature reporter Gil De LaMadrid, columnist Ken
Auletta, Interview magazine executive editor Bob
Colacello, WKTU radio host Paco Navarro, Nation
magazine publisher Hamilton Fish, and Star newspaper
entertainment editor Robin Leach. Boggs leads Auletta,
Fish, and Colacello in a discussion of Jimmy Carter's
efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East, debating
whether those efforts will make Carter a viable
candidate in the upcoming presidential election. They
also look at the liability to the president of his
brother Billy and at what some deem the opportunistic
tendencies of Senator Edward Kennedy. Leach then talks
about the makeshift way in which journalists covered
the invasion of Uganda when they were not allowed into
the country to witness the event. The guests then
explore the role of the United States in world politics
today; they discuss the relationship between
superpowers and the countries that control the flow of
oil, as well as the recent invasion of Vietnam by China.
Next they talk about the film release of the musical
"Hair," escapism in today's entertainment, and William
Paley's published suggestion that the American public
should cut back on its prime-time network-television
viewing in order to explore other forms of
entertainment. Auletta describes his new book "The
Streets Were Paved with Gold" as a look at the decline
of opportunities in New York City outside of Manhattan,
and Boggs comments on his own recent appearance in a
local production of "Come Blow Your Horn." Includes
commercials. Commercials include Conrad A. Ford for
the Police Athletic League. This program contains minor
technical problems. This represents the best copy of
this program currently available to the Museum.
