LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: BABY IT'S YOU {PART 1 OF 2} {CROSSOVER EPISODE WITH "HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET"} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. Part one of a two-part crossover story between the NBC police dramas, "Law & Order" and "Homicide: Life on the Street," this story concerns the mysterious death of a young model, Brittany Janaway. The fourteen-year-old model dies suddenly after complaining of severe stomach pains, and suspicions are raised because her father, a plastic surgeon, brought his sick daughter to his own medical offices rather than the hospital. Moreover, the autopsy reveals that Brittany died from toxic shock, caused by a brutal rape, and they find old scars and bruises on her body. The Janaways quickly hire an aggressive attorney, Leslie Drake, who puts political pressure on the police department while protecting Brittany's parents from extensive questioning. Drake also runs advertisements with a psychological profile of the rape suspect, and a large cash reward for his capture. Drake's tactics stymie the detectives' investigation so much that District Attorney Jack McCoy steps in and halts the Janaways' and Drake's machinations. In spite of Drake's efforts, the Janaways are still suspects in their child's death. When Detective Briscoe finds out that the Janaways have another residence in Baltimore, he calls Baltimore homicide detectives Munch and Falsone for additional help in the investigation. The cooperation between the two departments yields another suspect, Johnnie Ramirez, who was obsessed with the young model. But the case remains murky, and the detectives lack the proof required to pin the rape on any of the suspects. To complicate matters, the Baltimore and New York district attorneys are both vying to have the case tried in their own jurisdictions. Commercials deleted.
