MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO EXHIBITION SERIES, THE:
WORLDS WITHOUT END: THE ART AND HISTORY OF THE
SOAP OPERA, PACKAGE 1: IRNA PHILLIPS

Summary

Irna Phillips Irna Phillips created serial dramas that revolved around the institution of the family and portrayed "the life-giving strength that comes from a secure family unit, and the destructiveness its members can unconsciously wreak on one another." In the summer of 1952, the reigning "Queen of the Soap Opera" brought her inspirational radio drama "The Guiding Light" to television, adding a visual dimension to the trials of the wise immigrant Papa Bauer (played by Theo Goetz) and his daughter Bert (played by the late Charita Bauer for three decades). Four years later, Phillips's groundbreaking serial "As the World Turns" made its debut and introduced the Hughes family, who for forty years (and counting) have brought wisdom and devotion to its members and to the community of Oakdale, Illinois. In the premiere story line of PhillipsÕs later venture "Another World" (1964), the Matthews household struggled over daughter PatÕs unplanned pregnancy and subsequent murder of her boyfriend.
