DISNEY'S ONE SATURDAY MORNING (TV)
Summary
The premiere in this weekly two-hour block of Saturday morning children's programming. Host Charlie opens the show before her co-host Phil shows her his newest invention: "alarm socks." Then, an episode of "Brand Spanking New! Doug" -- an animated series about the adventures of Doug Funnie, a good-hearted eleven-year-old boy with a hyperactive imagination -- airs, entitled "Doug's Secret of Success." In this episode, a big change affects Beebe Bluff Middle School: A new vice principal is hired, Mr. Lamarr Bone, a former elementary school adversary of Doug and his pals. Bone wastes no time making up new "Boney" rules, vexing the students with his authoritarian nature. Later, Doug get offered a chance to join a secret organization of eighth graders and reluctantly accepts. Doug is told that the only way he can join the secret club is if he does something to prove that he is a "worthy" person. However, Doug soon learns that proving his worth is severely cutting into some monster-hunting times with Skeeter. Next, two episodes of "Recess" -- an animated series about the Third Street Elementary School and the lives of six of its students -- airs, entitled "The Break In" and "The New Kid." In "The Break In," T.J. leads the kids in a revolt after yet another day of terrible cafeteria lunches. T.J. sneaks into the back of the kitchen where "the good food" is stored. After setting off an alarm, T.J. is caught in the act by Miss Finster, who punishes him with no recess. The other kids then try and spring T.J. from detention, going so far as to solicit help from schoolmates such as "The Guru Kid" and "King Bob." In "The New Kid," T.J. and the kids hatch a plan to divert their teacher while they steal a key which allows them to unlock the wall clock and push the minutes ahead to recess time. Then, a new kid, military brat Gus, arrives at Third Street Elementary. T.J. immediately takes Gus under his wing, much to the dismay of T.J.'s pals who believe that one should never befriend a new kid. However, when "King Bob" discovers Gus, he immediately calls for constant harassment toward him, something that T.J. and his pals eventually decide to combat. Next, "The Monkey Boys" appear in "A Mess of a Desk," committing their typical shenanigans, this time in an office setting. Next, an episode of "Pepper Ann" -- an animated series about a free-spirited, 12-year-old redhead trying to achieve her wacky goals at Hazelnut Middle School -- airs, entitled "Ziterella." In this episode, yearbook class picture day draws near. After a series of embarrassing class pictures in earlier years, Pepper Ann is sure that she has perfected her smile and pose for this year's shot. Tragedy strikes, though, when Pepper Ann awakens on picture day with a huge blemish on her forehead. Distraught, she is forced to try and find a way to eliminate the embarrassing pimple. Afterward, Charlie wraps up the day's program. Brief segments interspersed throughout the two-hour block include: a "Mrs. Munger's Class" segment in which the students learn about origami; "Great Minds Think 4 Themselves," hosted by Aladdin's Genie and profiling nineteenth century conservationist John Muir; Manny the Uncanny visits Joe Blasco's movie makeup studios where he is turned into a zombie; "Nut Cases" where a child gets to become part of a cartoon; several Professor Chris Williams segments in which he teaches about such things as oxymorons, how to say hello in numerous languages, the exploits of President Theodore Roosevelt, and the difference between American and British words for the same item, such as gasoline vs. petrol and apartment vs. flat; and "I'm Just a Bill," a classic "America Rock" animated segment about the process of a bill becoming a law in Washington D.C. Includes commercials.
