HOLD THE DREAM {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
Part one of two in this dramatic miniseries. This drama, written by Barbara Taylor Bradford, is a sequel to "A Woman of Substance." In part one, Emma Harte, a family matriarch and the head of Harte Industries, allows her granddaughter, Paula, to manage various important projects. She expresses great confidence in Paula, who many believe is a carbon copy of Emma Harte herself. But Paula's husband, Jim, resents the fact that Harte Industries comes before he and their twins. Meanwhile, Paula's childhood friend, Shane, realizes that he is madly in love with Paula. Though he dares not say a word about his feelings, people begin to recognize his adoration for her. And Emma's daughter, Edwina, is angry with her son, Anthony, for abandoning his marriage and taking up with another woman, Sally. However, upon her mother's advice, Edwina decides to accept the situation in order to preserve her relationship with her son. When the family attends a surprise party in honor of Emma's eightieth birthday, Anthony's estranged wife, Minerva, drops in and swears she will never grant Anthony a divorce, while Emma announces that she has decided to retire. Emma passes on her responsibilities at Harte Industries to an ecstatic Paula, causing Jim to begin drinking excessively. Soon after this major event, Jim decides to resign from his managerial position at the Harte Industries newspaper; Minerva's water-logged body is found in a lake and Anthony becomes a murder suspect; Emma's longtime friend and companion, Blackie, dies; and Paula travels to New York on business, where she meets up with Shane and learns about his passionate desires as well as her own.
