RYAN'S HOPE {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere in this long-running daytime serial which follows the fortunes of the Ryan family in New York City. In this episode, Frank Ryan is running for city council, yet he fails to appear at the tavern where he is supposed to meet his sister, Mary, and their parents, Johnny and Maeve Ryan, who are throwing a party for him. The following events also occur: at Riverside Hospital, Nurse Gonzalez lectures Dr. Bucky Carter; Dr. Faith Coleridge, who Bucky has his eye on, offers advice on how to deal with the nurse; and, when Bucky asks for help in developing a relationship with Faith, Dr. Pat Ryan tells Bucky he ought to concentrate on the nursing staff instead. Back at the tavern, Mary calls the clubhouse, searching for Frank in vain; Jack Fenelli, a reporter, says he wants to do a story on Frank's campaign, but Johnny remembers how Jack once wrote a story that nearly destroyed Frank's career as a police officer; Mary offers Jack some innocuous information about Frank; Bucky asks Faith if she would like to get a cup of coffee, but she refuses, even when Pat intervenes on Bucky's behalf; and, just as the celebration at the tavern is beginning, Frank's wife, Delia, enters the tavern shaking and frightened, explaining that she was nearly run over by a taxi.
