ELECTRIC COMPANY, THE {"CK"} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of children's programs designed to improve young people's reading skills. The series incorporates live action and animation to illustrate reading techniques. This program deals with the sound "ck" and the use of contractions. Highlights include the following: the exuberant Short Circus kids watch "The Adventures of Dick Daring," featuring Dorothy Daring as the heroine; a baseball player explains that waiting "on deck" means waiting to bat; a vampire croons, "A Peck on the Neck"; J. Arthur Crank is given five seconds to read the next word he sees, despite the fact he is on lunch break; the word "tickle" literally tickles a girl until she is giggling on the floor; "The Adventures of Letterman: In a Pickle" features the nefarious Spellbinder, pickle mogul Mr. Dill, and his son, Gerkin; a boy asks a pristine girl to play outside, but she "gets a glow from saying no" with contractions like "n't"; an unresponsive silent E refuses to divulge how she changes the meaning of words; and a children's chorus performs a nonsensical song as the words to the song appear, one by one, on urban ads and street signs.
