LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: CAUSA MORTIS {SEVENTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. In this episode, Detectives Briscoe and Curtis investigate the murder of Maureen Rankin, a night school teacher and mother of three. At first they assume the murderer to be from the ranks of her dangerous adult students. Later, however, they find a taped recording of the event at the scene of the crime, which leads them to suspect carjacking as the motive. After an exhaustive search, they locate the stolen car, now owned by Anna Galvez, and trace it back to her fiance, Fernando Salva. Assistant D.A. Ross joins Assistant D.A. McCoy in attempting to convict Salva of murder, but they find themselves stymied when Judge Scarletti will not allow two vital pieces of evidence to be used in the trial -- the tape recording of Rankin pleading for her life, and Anna's confession of the location of the murder weapon. Ross tries to convince McCoy to turn over the case to the U.S. Attorney's Office since federal standards will admit more evidence, but McCoy refuses to allow it to leave his jurisdiction. Anna's testimony on the witness stand, however, seals Salva's fate. As the program ends, McCoy reveals why the case was so important to him. Commercials deleted.
