ABC MINISERIES: MURDER ONE: DIARY OF A SERIAL KILLER {PART 1 OF 3} (TV)
Summary
Part one of three. One in this serial drama series focusing, in its second season, on three major cases of attorney Jimmy Wyler and his associates. In the first of three segments in this miniseries, Jimmy takes over an unusual murder case from his friend and mentor Stanley, who has suddenly fallen ill with cancer. Stanley has been building a defense for his client -- a serial killer named Clifford Banks, who is known to the public as "The Street Sweeper" -- for several months, and Jimmy finds that he will have to cram in dozens of witness re-interviews and late nights if his team is to provide adequate representation for Banks, widely assumed to be a murderer seventeen times over. Even Jimmy is doubtful of his client's innocence; the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming. What sets the case apart from other serial-killer media circuses is that the Street Sweeper has a sizable amount of public and media support for his cause, as all of his victims were ex-felons themselves, convicted of crimes ranging from multiple homicide to serial rape. Jimmy is uncomfortable with the case, but he feels that he has to see it through to honor his friend. Each interview Jimmy conducts reveals more bizarre facts about the case. One of the more shocking revelations that emerges is that Jimmy's history with Clifford Banks goes back deeper than he originally thought. Banks claims that he was moved to kill after his mentally retarded brother was murdered by a maniacal drug addict, the defendant in a case in which Jimmy was involved when he was working for the D.A.'s office. He recalls cutting a deal with the drug-addict murderer that set the man free with no more than a metaphorical slap on the wrist. His history with the Street Sweeper, then, is tangled and explosive from the very beginning. Things only get more complicated when Hollywood starts knocking at Jimmy's door looking to buy the rights to Banks' life story. To add to the confusion, Banks demands that he be allowed to marry one of his many female pen pals while incarcerated. When Jimmy comes across new evidence to suggest that the Police acted illegally in their arrest of the Street Sweeper, he becomes torn between his loyalty to the Constitution and the horrifying realization that he may be in a position to turn a serial killer back out on the streets. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned. Continues with T:48794.
