MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: FROM SOUP TO NUTS: BEHIND THE SCENES OF TALK SOUP {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio in Los Angeles. Moderated by Los Angeles Museum manager Lani Daniels, this seminar examines the E! Entertainment network program, "Talk Soup," which features clips from daily talk shows, and dry, sardonic commentary about the programs' wild topics. After opening remarks from Daniels, a highlight tape featuring memorable moments from "Talk Soup" is screened. Following the screening, Daniels introduces the following members of the "Talk Soup" creative team: executive in charge of production Marta Tracy; executive producer Alex Duda; senior producer Angela Gordon; producers Jeff Zimmer, Mark Turner, and Mark Bernstein; head writer Brad Gyori; writer Stan Evans; and host John Henson. The panel members discuss the following topics, among others: the way the series was pitched to network executives and developed; the way talk show clips are chosen; whether skits on the show are written beforehand or strictly improvised; whether the show's popularity sagged after the transition from former host Greg Kinnear to the current host, John Henson; what sort of feedback, if any, "Talk Soup" producers receive from the talk shows after their clips are used; and the panelists' insights and thoughts on the whole talk show craze. Then, questions from the seminar audience lead to discussion of the following topics, among others: the interaction between staff members of the talk shows and "Talk Soup"; the origin of the name of the show; the reason the crew constantly appears in front of the camera; stages of the production process once the clips are chosen; other shows that may have inspired "Talk Soup"; the way traditional talk shows are leaning toward serious topics instead of outrageous topics, and its possible impact on "Talk Soup"; whether the series uses clips from talk shows in other countries; programs in development that use the same format as "Talk Soup"; the sort of clips producers will not use because they are truly tasteless; the most controversial moment on the show; what the staff does when talk shows go on hiatus; the way they decide who will be a guest host for the show; whether they have plans to change the format of the show as time goes by; and future possibilities for the series.
