NYPD BLUE: WHERE'S 'SWALDO (TV)
Summary
One in this series of rough-edged police dramas about the cases and private lives of the detectives and station house personnel of a Manhattan precinct. In this episode, black activist Kwasi Olushola is found shot to death in an apparent drive-by shooting. At Kwasi's apartment, Detectives Sipowicz and Simone find his daughter, Hanna, sitting on the stoop, waiting for her father to return. When the detectives speak with Kwasi's ex-wife, she is uneasy about having Sipowicz handle this case because of his previous racial run-in with Kwasi. Hanna also remarks that her Uncle Jerome had spoken to Kwasi prior to his death. Meanwhile, Detectives Medavoy and Martinez investigate a fatal shooting at a bodega, where the only witness is a money-hungry junkie. Sipowicz and Simone find Jerome at his apartment, huddled in a closet, scared and shaking. As the evidence pours in, the case appears to involve a drug deal gone wrong. Explaining that he got Kwasi killed because of drugs he found in his building, Jerome explains why the shooting occurred and how the drugs were involved. In the meantime, a local prostitute who was in the basement of the bodega tells Medavoy and Martinez that she heard nothing, and the bodega owner says the guy who was killed was shaking him down, complicating their case further. Ultimately, the detectives arrest a suspect, whom the prostitute refuses to identify. Meanwhile, Sipowicz and Simone raid a club and arrest a few known felons who may be responsible for the shooting, and Jerome looks at the police lineup. When Jerome is interviewed again about a note he left for the police, he finally admits he was in the car during the shooting and explains that Kwasi died trying to protect him and correct a bad situation. In a tension-filled moment, Sipowicz tries to apologize to Hanna and Kwasi's ex-wife about his prejudices towards Kwasi, and then bares his soul to Simone. Commercials deleted.
