STANLEY SIEGEL SHOW, THE {TRUMAN CAPOTE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of talk/interview programs, hosted by Stanley Siegel. This edition features a conversation with writer and raconteur Truman Capote, who comes directly to the studio after a night of wild partying. Capote begins by explaining that his constant state of anxiety causes him to turn to drugs and alcohol. His current worries concern the success of his upcoming book, "Answered Prayers," which he says has already caused him to lose a number of friends. Despite these problems, Capote reveals, he is driven to be creative and generally unconcerned about what others think of his work. He further examines the types of self-destructive personality that gravitate toward drugs and alcohol and the role that these substances can play in their downfall. After Capote leaves the set, Siegel talks about his guest's rambling, incoherent state during the interview, and the host invites viewers to call in and express their opinions about the televised conversation. The program's viewers make comments about Capote's appearance. The discussion with Siegel that follows also touches on the burden and emptiness of fame and the sensationalist exploitation of celebrities' foibles, notes that the sensitivity and insight of Capote's writings seem to be lacking in his examination of his own life, and warns of the danger of practicing amateur on-air psychiatry. Includes commercials, promos, and PSAs. Commercials include Beverly Sills for UJA-Federation Joint Campaign.
