COURT TV SPECIAL EDITION: THE O.J. SIMPSON TRIAL {PART 4 OF 4}: CLOSING STATEMENTS AND THE VERDICT (TV)
Summary
Part four of four. This four-part special recaps the double-murder trial of former football great O.J. Simpson. In this final installment, "Closing Arguments and the Verdict," Court TV attempts to examine the ways in which the end of the Simpson trial "ignited a national debate about our justice system," in the words of host Gregg Jarrett. In his closing argument, Johnnie Cochran repeats the phrase, "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit" like a mantra; the words refer to the glove found at the murder scene, which appeared a bit snug when Simpson tried it on, although prosecutors were able to turn up footage of Simpson wearing a pair of tight gloves during a sports cast. Cochran also draws an elaborate analogy between Detective Mark Fuhrman and Adolf Hitler; Jarrett tells viewers that the remarks from Cochran stirred controversy and drew ire from many different types of people. In the prosecution's closing argument, Marcia Clark repeats her own mantra, telling the jury, "You must not ignore the mountain of evidence against O. J. Simpson." She also asks jurors many times to forget about the O. J. Simpson they thought they knew, from the "Naked Gun" films and the Hertz commercials. "This O. J. Simpson is a murderer," she declares. After Jarrett screens footage of the announcement of Simpson's acquittal, the anchor provides his audience with a brief update on the post-trial activities of those involved in the case.
