Summary

One in this series of documentary reports hosted by Mike Wallace. This program focuses on the rise of Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) from the gutters of Vienna to absolute power in Germany. Highlights include an examination of the following topics: Hitler's childhood and parental guidance; his life as a poor, self-pitying artist in Vienna; the effect of World War I on Hitler; the creation of the German Worker's Party, which later became known as the National Socialist Party (Nazi Party); Hitler's private army; the National Socialist Party's failed revolt of 1923; Hitler's jail term; the book "Mein Kampf" ("My Struggle"); the rebuilding of the Nazi Party; the economic struggles in Germany after World War I; the power of the "brown shirts"; Hindenburg's dwindling power; the start of Hitler's tyranical rule; the members of Hitler's cabinet; book burnings; the persecution of Jews; Hitler's "economic security"; his alliance with Benito Mussolini; the appeasement of Hitler by the British and French governments; the fate of Czechoslovakia; Hitler's pact with Stalin; Hitler's march through Austria and Vienna; the Nazi invasion of Poland and the start of World War II; and Hitler's view of the Third Reich. Also included are photos and footage of the following: riots in Germany after World War I, Hitler making speeches, Economic Dictator Hermann Goering, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's right-hand man Rudolf Hess, book burnings, the Nazi march through the Rhineland, Hitler's meeting with Benito Mussolini, Hitler's march through Austria and Vienna, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain commenting on his recent meeting with Hitler, and the Nazi attack on Poland. Commercials deleted.
