SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {ROSIE O'DONNELL, WHITNEY HOUSTON, PENNY MARSHALL} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Rosie O'Donnell hosts this program, featuring guests Penny Marshall and Whitney Houston. In the opening sequence, featuring impersonations, President Bill Clinton offers Bob Dole several cabinet positions since so many staffers have deserted him, and conceives an idea for "The Jackson Family Christmas Special," hosted by singer Michael Jackson. In the opening monologue, O'Donnell focuses on popular television shows of the 1970s, and Marshall and Houston join her in singing Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe." Sketches include the following: a commercial parody for Darnette disposable toilets; the Spartan cheerleaders Craig and Ariana, as well as O'Donnell, peddling smoked foods at a shopping mall; a Catholic high school rehearsal for a Christmas pageant with a nebbish girl, played by Molly Shannon, who ruins the performance of Houston's star character; an installment of the Ambiguously Gay Duo, where the two superheroes save Santa from the forces of evil; "A Christmas Greeting" from the Goat Boy; and the "Weekend Update" with Norm MacDonald, featuring an interview with Beavis and Butt-Head on the true meaning of Christmas. Other highlights include the following: Houston sings her hit song "I Believe in You and Me"; Cheri Oteri, O'Donnell and Marshall play neighbors feuding over outdoor nativity scene displays; Tim Meadows and Tracy Morgan spoof ambulance-chasing lawyers who advertise on television; and in "The Local News" program, taped from Joe Blow's basement in Queens, Joe Blow interviews the widow of a local police detective who was accidentally killed while toasting a Pop Tart. The program ends as Houston, accompanied by the Georgia Mass Choir, sings gospel selections. Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include Dennis Rodman for Kodak cameras.
