MURDER ONE: CHAPTER ONE, YEAR TWO {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this serial drama series focusing, in its second season, on three major cases of attorney Jimmy Wyler and his associates. In this episode, highly-regarded prosecuting attorney Jimmy Wyler is passed up for a promotion by his boss, the sleazy district attorney Roger Garfield, a candidate for governor of California. Weary of his financial woes and of Garfield's petty politics, Wyler quits to go into private practice as a defense attorney. In short order, the governor of California is assassinated and Wyler finds his first client: Sharon Rooney, the young woman arrested for the shooting murders of the governor and the young woman in bed with him. After accepting Wyler's pro bono representation, Rooney -- a former mistress of the governor -- flatly informs him that she indeed committed the crime. Soon after, Wyler is approached by the lawyers of Hoffman & Associates with an offer to take over as head of the firm. The ambitious young lawyers have found themselves without a "marquee player," since Teddy Hoffman's departure, and consequently, without cases. Wyler accepts and soon finds himself up against the hostilities of his former associates at the D.A.'s office, who feel betrayed by his defection to the other side. He also finds himself at odds with lawyer Chris Docknovich after he appoints Justine Appleton as second chair on the Rooney case, and later hires a new partner, Aaron Mosley, without consulting the partners. In other developments, Wyler is visited by the treacherous mogul Malcolm Dietrich, who wants to retain him; and Wyler's formidable mother suggests over her birthday dinner that Dietrich is responsible for Wyler's father's death. Later, Sharon Rooney attempts suicide in her cell, and Wyler implores her to have faith in him. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
