ER {E.R.}: FEVERS OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital. As the episode opens, Carole responds to a call with the paramedics and finds a little girl buried under a pile of rubble as a result of a faulty water heater's explosion. Next, they discover a member of a Chinese drug gang who has been shot repeatedly in a dispute. As a result of Shep's increasing rage against the negligent individuals and criminals he is required to help, he shoves a member of the gang and causes serious injuries, leading his new partner to file a report against him. Meanwhile, Dr. Lewis is consumed with sadness over returning baby Suzie to her unstable sister Chloe, and throws herself into her work. In the course of the day Dr. Lewis performs tremendously -- she prevents a woman from losing her unborn child with an ingenious diagnosis; saves an elderly man from an accidental overdose while discovering his inability to read; and discovers that a patient has mugged another patient, a blind woman. This spectacular series of events, representative of much of her work, leads Drs. Greene and Weaver to consider her for the position of chief resident. The honor of Resident of the Year goes to the unpopular Dr. Benton, who learns that he was nominated for the award by Dr. Vucelich, against whom he had filed an ethics complaint. Dr. Carter is unexpectedly placed on a rotation with Dr. Ross, and learns some respect for a specialty he previously had considered boring. Dr. Greene is frustrated with the oncologist of one of his patients, who seems to be giving her less than satisfactory care. Personal matters also come into play as Dr. Ross begins an affair with his father's girlfriend, and Jennifer and Mark's discussion of their divorce arrangements leads to an unexpected development. Commercials deleted.
