ER {E.R.}: LOVE'S LABOR LOST (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital. In this episode, chief resident Dr. Mark Greene finds himself perilously out of his depth as he oversees a complicated childbirth. The episode begins with a gunshot victim being dumped from a speeding car in front of the emergency room entrance. Meanwhile, Dr. Benton loses his cool when his invalid mother is admitted with a broken hip; Dr. Ross sees a young boy suffering from insecticide poisoning; and Dr. Carter treats an elderly man for hemorrhoids and assists Dr. Greene in assessing the self-inflicted damage a copiously tattooed man incurred by trying to sand off an offending image. Throughout the program, Dr. Greene treats a pregnant woman suffering discomfort close to her delivery date. After an initial incorrect diagnosis results in the woman's collapse on her way home, the guilt-stricken Greene focuses his exclusive attention on her, committing a series of escalating mistakes as the woman's condition proves too complicated for him to handle. A harrowing, botched delivery leaves Greene shaken and disconsolate, his confidence shattered, and his much anticipated promotion to attending physician in jeopardy. Commercials deleted.
