ER {E.R.}: DO ONE, TEACH ONE, KILL ONE (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital. In this episode, Carter is disappointed with his surgical internship since he is still following up on Benton's patients. Nurse Hathaway accompanies the EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) unit, and she clashes with Shep over the treatment of an obese man who is stuck in his apartment. Dr. Lewis dislikes the way Dr. Weaver is running the E.R. and voices her complaint to Dr. Greene, who promises to speak to Weaver. Meanwhile, as Dr. Ross treats a four-year-old boy with AIDS, he is disturbed to find that a pediatric clinic prescribed overlapping prescriptions for the child, which nearly caused a fatal overdose. Carter demonstrates a routine procedure for Harper on his very first patient, but the situation goes awry and Benton orders an emergency surgery. After Ross stabilizes his four-year-old patient, he decides to inform the pediatric clinic of its mistake. But his actions irk the head of pediatrics, who dislikes Ross's renegade attitude. In addition, Dr. Weaver informs Dr. Lewis that any procedure she performs must be cleared first, further upsetting Lewis. Following the surgery performed on Carter's patient, the patient's heart rate drops suddenly and the patient later dies. Hathaway and Shep team up to restrain a drug-crazed man who stands on top of the ambulance. And at the end of the day, Shep asks Hathaway out on a date and she accepts reluctantly. Also, Benton and Jeannie discuss the state of their relationship, leading to more confusion for Benton. Lewis's sister deserts her baby again, leaving Lewis to act as a mother figure, and Carter and Harper give Carter's patient a proper farewell. Commercials deleted.
