COLD LAZARUS: THREE (TV)

Summary

Continued from T:43602. Part three in this four-part miniseries created by British television writer Dennis Potter and set in the rigid and technologically controlled future of 2368. The head of screenwriter Daniel Feeld has been frozen for almost four centuries and is now being revived in a cryogenics laboratory by a team of scientists led by Emma Porlock. The scientists of the Lazarus Project, as it is called, are able to summon forth memories from Feeld's brain, which they project on the laboratory's "living wall." The thrill of seeing into the mind of a man from a distant and far more pleasant past is soon mitigated by moral and ethical dilemmas; and matters are further complicated when two rival conglomerates begin vying ruthlessly for the television and virtual reality rights to Feeld's memories. In this episode, Porlock emerges drunk from her meeting with David Siltz, after being plied with alcohol and promises of bounteous funding. She has the evening to consider Siltz's offer, which will give him international media rights to Feeld's memories; and on her way home, Porlock pays a surprise visit to Fyodor to ask for advice. A shocking discovery quickly sobers her: Fyodor has just murdered the director of public relations, and Fyodor makes an equally startling confession explaining his actions. Later, Fyodor urges Porlock to accept Siltz's offer for subversive reasons Siltz might never imagine. The next morning, Porlock and her team continue viewing Feeld's memories: in one, Feeld lip-syncs to "Pennies From Heaven" in a karaoke bar and in another, he shoots a gangster named "Pig" Mailion -- jolting the scientists out of their seats. In later memory sequences, a young Feeld falls in love with Beth, the girlfriend of a friend; and the older Feeld becomes disoriented in a restaurant when characters from his screenplay come to life before him. Later, Porlock tries to make a secret call to Siltz, accepting his offer, but Masdon's guards report her activities. In California, a furious Masdon grows suspicious and puts on her virtual reality headset, seeing for the first time what the Lazarus Project has produced. An uncharacteristically pleasant Masdon then phones Porlock to report that her budget will be maintained. Siltz calls the team to begin setting up a plan to steal the head from Masdon's lab. In the laboratory, alone, Feeld's head summons images of Beth, to whom he talks about his troubled twin brother. Meanwhile, Fyodor and a team hired by Siltz storm the laboratory and make the robbery look like a R.O.N. attack. Continues with T:43604.

("Cold Lazarus" continues the story of Daniel Feeld, which begins with Potter's miniseries, "Karaoke." The two miniseries, collectively, are the late Dennis Potter's final work and were co-produced and telecast, at Potter's behest, by both the BBC and Channel 4. "Karaoke" is part of the Museum's collection. See T:43605 through T:43608.)

(The miniseries "Cold Lazarus" premiered on Channel 4 on four consecutive Sundays from May 26 through June 16, 1996. "Cold Lazarus" was repeated on BBC1 on consecutive Mondays from May 27 through June 17, 1996.)
