TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {HARRY ANDERSON, JIM CARREY, FOUR PLAY WITH EL DEBARGE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, Carson welcomes actors Harry Anderson and Jim Carrey, and music group Four Play, featuring vocalist El DeBarge. Carson's monologue touches on the following topics, among others: Geraldo Rivera's "sweeps month" efforts; Halloween in Beverly Hills; the peace conference in Madrid; accusations that Jerry Brown lifted a presidential campaign speech from a song by the rock group Midnight Oil; the recent revelation that Florence Henderson and her "Brady Bunch" son Barry Williams dated during the series; and a scientific breakthrough in the area of dinosaur flatulence. Next Ed McMahon wishes Carson -- who turned sixty-six on October 23 -- a happy birthday; and Carson reads a humorous selection of "proposed" country music song titles. The first guest, Harry Anderson, presents some unusual Halloween masks he collected, and has Carson assist him in a magic trick in which Anderson must free his hand from a contraption into which its been locked, before a descending circular saw severs his hand. Anderson later discusses the final season of his television series, "Night Court" and his plans to go college when production ends. The next guest, Jim Carrey, discusses his first appearance on "The Tonight Show" in 1983, performs an impression of Wile E. Coyote, reenacts a scene from the movie "Poltergeist," does an impression of actor Kevin Bacon, and relates some of the negative effects of becoming famous. Finally, Four Play performs a number with vocalist El DeBarge, followed by an instrumental piece. Includes commercials and promos.
