TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {BETTE MIDLER, BILL MAHER} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, Carson's guests are singer/actress Bette Midler and comedian Bill Maher. Carson's opening monologue touches on the following topics, among others: why his show now airs at 11:35 instead of 11:30, as it had for years; how Ed Sullivan would have fared in today's world of exploitational daytime talk shows; General Electric's "sumptuous" farewell party for him; and tensions between Vice President Dan Quayle and New York Governor Mario Cuomo. Carson warmly introduces his first guest, Bette Midler, recalling her first appearance on "The Tonight Show" in the early 1970s. Midler performs two songs from the soundtrack of her new film, "For the Boys" -- "Some Stuff Like That There" and "Every Road Leads Back to You." Midler then joins Carson and talks about the following topics, among others: "For the Boys" (followed by a clip from the film); her thoughts about aging; her need for her father's approval; an incident in which she accidentally mooned the Harvard Hasty Pudding club; and the mellowing effects of marriage and motherhood. Midler then launches into a bawdy diddy about the invention of the brassiere; and takes the stage once more to perform the Beatles' song "In My Life," also from the movie soundtrack. Next, comedian Bill Maher touches on the following topics, among others in his stand-up routine: the poor state of the Democratic party; the Kennedys; the lack of Republican sex scandals; the Clarence Thomas - Anita Hill hearing; and the Persian Gulf conflict as a "yuppie war." Due to lack of time, the scheduled third guest, drummer Louie Bellson, does not appear on this program. Includes commercials and promos.
