SURVIVORS OF THE HOLOCAUST {TURNER ORIGINAL PRODUCTION} (TV)
Summary
This documentary special, through the use of historical footage and interviews, recounts the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust, as remembered by a number of survivors. The interviews cover the following topics, among others: what life was like for Polish Jews before Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933; how life changed drastically as Hitler began to gain more power; the signs that were posted everywhere forbidding Jews to participate in the pleasures of everyday life; how Hitler began carrying out his racial laws by burning synagogues and boycotting Jewish merchants; how Germany became "pure" when the country hosted the 1936 Olympic games; how Hitler enforced the racial laws by marking every Jew with an armband and relocating Jews to the Warsaw ghetto; what the living conditions were like in the ghetto, especially for the children; how Jews were put on trains and sent to Auschwitz, a prison camp; how families were separated, sometimes forever, when the trains arrived at Auschwitz; the systematic killing that took place at the concentration camp; how German soldiers sometimes forced Jewish prisoners to kill and beat their fellow prisoners; the ways in which the Jews helped each other and even celebrated some holidays; the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945, which freed the prisoners and in some cases reunited them with their families; and what it is like living with the horrifying visions and memories from the Holocaust.
The survivors interviewed include the following: Dr. Gottfried Bloch, Shari Braun, Shony Alex Braun, Fred Buch, Helen Chalef, Bela Cislowski, Adolf Deutsch, Trudy Englander, Renee Firestone, Nathan Fleischer, Si Frumkin, Stanley Goodrich, Klara Halberstadt, Siegfried Halbreich, Sigi Hart, Fred Jackson, Diane Jacobs, Erika Jacoby, Sol Liber, Silvia Grohs Martin, Andrew Meisels, Mel Mermelstein, Gertruda Milchova, Rachel Goldman Miller, Dr. Alfred Pasternak, Michael Popik, Carol Redlich, Henry Rosmarin, Sarah Salamon, Henia Schweitzer, Benny Stark, Mollie Stauber, Emilie Stern, Alice Sylvester, Hellmuth Szprycer, Eugene Tabak, Lili Weinberg, Claire Weisz, and Solomon Wieder.
