GREAT PERFORMANCES: JERRY HERMAN'S BROADWAY AT THE BOWL (TV)

Summary

This musical program, taped at the Hollywood Bowl in 1993, pays tribute to Broadway composer and lyricist Jerry Herman. As the show opens, Liza Minnelli speaks about Herman's life and accomplishments. Highlights of this program include the following performances: the members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra plays an overture consisting of a medley of songs from a variety of Herman's Broadway musicals; Carol Channing welcomes the audience to the show and introduces Leslie Uggams, who performs "It's Today" from "Mame"; George Hearn sings "Movies Were Movies" from "Mack & Mabel"; Florence Lacey performs "It Only Takes a Moment" from "Hello, Dolly!"; Lee Roy Reams sings a medley of "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" and "Before the Parade Passes By" from "Hello, Dolly!"; the members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra perform a medley of waltzes by Herman; Lorna Luft, Florence Lacey, and Karen Morrow sing "Wherever He Ain't" from "Mack & Mabel"; Davis Gaines performs "Song on the Sand" from "La Cage Aux Folles"; four female performers present "Take It All Off" from "Jerry's Girls" and are followed by Lorna Luft, who performs the same piece in a slightly different style with the very different lyrics of "Put It Back On"; Karen Morrow sings "We Need a Little Christmas" from "Mame"; Leslie Uggams performs "If He Walked Into My Life" also from "Mame"; performers present the different ways "Hello, Dolly!" has been performed including versions created by Carol Channing, Pearl Bailey, Ethel Merman, Louis Armstrong, the Oscar Mayer company, and President Lyndon B. Johnson's campaign; Carol Channing then sings a verse of "Hello, Dolly!"; Bea Arthur performs "The Man in the Moon" from "Mame"; Rita Moreno and Leslie Uggams sing "Bosom Buddies" from "Mame"; Lorna Luft performs "Time Heals Everything" from "Mack & Mabel"; the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra plays the title song from "Mame" during which stills taken from the movie and the Broadway musical are shown; Michael Feinstein performs "I Won't Send Roses" from "Mack & Mabel"; Karen Morrow sings "I Don't Want to Know" from "Dear World"; Rita Moreno performs "Tap Your Troubles Away" from "Mack & Mabel"; Leslie Uggams and Florence Lacey sing "Kiss Her Now" from "Dear World"; Lee Roy Reams performs the title song from "La Cage Aux Folles"; George Hearn sings "I Am What I Am" from "La Cage Aux Folles"; and Jerry Herman is joined on stage by the cast as he performs "The Best of Times Is Now" from "La Cage Aux Folles." In addition, Angela Lansbury and Paul and Linda McCartney sent their best wishes to Herman via tape.
