LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: ANGEL (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. In this episode, Detectives Briscoe and Curtis investigate the disappearance of an infant from a neighborhood Catholic church. The distraught young mother claims her baby daughter disappeared while she was in confession, having left the infant in a carriage just outside the confessional. When pressed for details, she describes having seen a Puerto Rican man sitting in the rear of the otherwise empty church. The detectives interview the parish priest, who describes the woman as a loving mother and devoted Catholic; and her husband -- though estranged -- echoes these sentiments. At first scoffing at Van Buren's suggestion that the mother might be lying, Curtis is surprised by the young woman's behavior following a television press conference; and the search for the Puerto Rican suspect soon hits a dead end. Returning to the church with the mother, Curtis elicits a shocking confession from her. Later, the young woman is tried for the murder of her daughter, and what Assistant D.A. Jack McCoy thought would be a cut-and-dried trial becomes a complex moral battlefield when a novice lawyer from legal aid, assigned to the mother's defense, turns out to be a wolf in sheep's clothing.
