WORLD SERIES, 1995: GAME 1 {ATLANTA BRAVES VS. CLEVELAND INDIANS} (TV)

Summary

This 1995 World Series baseball game features the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium in the first game of the series. During the pre-game show, sports commentators Al Michaels, Tim McCarver, Jim Palmer, and on-field reporter Lesley Visser discuss the following topics: the impact of the strike, which abruptly ended the 1994 season; the pitching match-up between Greg Maddux of the Braves and Orel Hershiser of the Indians; the main objectives for Kenny Lofton of the Indians and Marquis Grissom of the Braves as leadoff hitters; and a brief history of past World Series moments, including Don Larsen's perfect game in 1956, Bill Mazeroski's series-winning home run in 1960, and Reggie Jackson hitting three home runs in one game in 1977. Following the pre-game show and team introductions, Darius Rucker, lead singer of the music group Hootie and the Blowfish, sings the national anthem, and Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr., throws the ceremonial first pitch. Game highlights include the following, among others: Lofton hits a sharp grounder and reaches first base on an error; Lofton steals second base and then third on a close play; Lofton scores on an infield out, giving the Indians a one to nothing lead; Grissom hits a single in the bottom of the first inning to begin a possible Braves rally; with Grissom on second, Chipper Jones hits a screaming line drive, snared by Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel, who proceeds to double up Grissom to end the threat; in the bottom of the second inning, Braves first baseman Fred McGriff smashes one into the stands and ties the score; in the top of the fifth, the Indians get their first hit off of Maddux; and, by the bottom of the sixth inning, the game has become a duel between pitchers. Mark Lemke hits a two-out single off of Orel Hershiser, giving the Braves their first hit since the second inning; in the bottom of the seventh, Hershiser walks Braves batters Fred McGriff and David Justice; Indians manager Mike Hargrove makes a pitching change and brings in Paul Assenmacher, who must deal with runners on first and second with no outs; both managers strategize and fiddle with their lineups; Assenmacher proceeds to walk with the bases loaded and no outs, prompting Hargrove to replace him with Julian Tavarez; on a grounder to short, Omar Vizquel bobbles the ball and misses out on turning a routine double play, but records the force-out at second, allowing the Braves to score the go-ahead run; controversy erupts as Bobby Cox vehemently argues the call, claiming that Vizquel did not have control of the ball when he touched second base; Rafael Belliard then makes a perfect bunt, completing the suicide squeeze play and giving the Braves a three-to-one lead; Braves pitcher Greg Maddux remains in control of the Indians' lineup; in the bottom of the eighth, the Indians make another pitching change and bring in the hard-throwing Alan Embree, who completes the inning with no damage done; Kenny Lofton hits a one-out single to keep the Indians' chances alive; Vizquel hits an infield grounder with Lofton running; Lofton advances to third and then home following a throwing error by McGriff, narrowing the Braves' lead to three-to-two with two outs; and Chipper Jones catches a foul ball, ending the game and giving the Braves a one-to-nothing lead in the series. Once Maddux is named the player of the game, reporter Lesley Visser interviews McGriff about the game and his remarkable post-season success. Includes commercials, promos, and a public service announcement. This program is closed-captioned.
