MURDER ONE: CHAPTER TWO (TV)
Summary
One in this serial drama series focusing -- in its first season -- on attorney Ted Hoffman's defense of two famous suspects in the murder of Jessica Costello, a fifteen-year-old girl. In this episode, Ted Hoffman and Lisa Gillespie represent Richard Cross at his arraignment for the murder of Jessica Costello, and when the judge denies bail, Hoffman becomes suspicious of Cross's sudden serene confidence in the judicial system. Meanwhile, Justine learns that the law firm receptionist, Lila Marquette's fiancŽ, Darrell, is being charged with assault for supposedly ramming his truck into a woman's car on the freeway at night -- a charge he vehemently denies and which seems to have racial and monetary motivations. Later, a young woman named Beverly Nichols strolls into Hoffman's offices and claims to have been with Cross the night of the murder, suggesting he had been defending her from a violent husband. Justine decides to take on Darrell's case, which his current lawyer appears to have been pleading out simply because Darrell is black. While Justine pleads Darrell's case in court, Hoffman's private investigator discovers intriguing information about Beverly Nichols. In light of Nichols's alibi, the D.A. dismisses charges against Cross and he is released. Later, Hoffman gets a desperate call from movie star Neil Avedon, who was arrested for Jessica's murder when his semen was found in her body. He begs Hoffman to take him back as a client, and Gary Blondo tells Hoffman the studio making Avedon's latest picture will pay the legal fees, as the star is needed to complete the big-budget film. That evening, at home, Hoffman has a disturbing revelation about effects of the media frenzy on his young daughter. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
