Barbara Walters interviews Powell about the following topics, among others: whether he considers himself a candidate for the presidential election; the historical events that occurred while he was a general; the way his military background never followed a straight path; his new book entitled, "My American Journey"; lessons he learned in the first eight weeks of military service; his family and his strong relationship with his wife; whether he believes the country is ready for an African-American President; his first experience with racism during his training at Fort Benning; his greatest likes and dislikes about himself; talking about, and paying a visit, to Jamaica, where his extended family still resides; the type of child he was academically and socially; viewpoints from friends with whom he grew up in the rougher sections of the Bronx, New York; discovering the military while attending the City College of New York; his two tours of duty in Vietnam, during one of which he was injured in a helicopter crash; his view on President Bill Clinton's non-service during the Vietnam era; answers for the critics who claimed he was too quick on his decisions during the Persian Gulf War; his relationship with President Clinton while he was part of his cabinet; whether he has the inner fire that is necessary to run for President; the reason nobody knows if he is a Republican or a Democrat; his wife's important role in his future political decisions; his views on religious groups becoming heavily involved in politics; the stands he takes on issues such as abortion, prayer in schools, gun control, the death penalty, welfare, and taxes; and the type of President he feels he would make if he were to run and win the election.
