ALL-STAR SELECTION SPECIAL {BASEBALL}, THE 1995 (TV)
Summary
This special, hosted by Al Michaels, looks at the starting line-ups, as well as the reserve players, that have been selected for the Sixty-Sixth Annual Major League Baseball All-Star Game, which has the best players from the National League taking on the best from the American League in the midsummer classic. Highlights include: the announcements of the starting line-ups for both teams, as well as the reserves and the managers; a look back at some memorable moments from past all-star games including the 1966 game played at Busch Stadium in St. Louis and the 1969 game played at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, both of which went to extra innings; the former all-star catcher and current announcer Tim McCarver discusses the troubles the game is going through since last season's strike, the salary dealings, and the conflicts between owners and players which has hurt the game tremendously; the former all-star pitcher and also current announcer Jim Palmer mentions the strange patterns of winning streaks that have occurred during the all-star games; the Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr., talks about the elation of being the leading vote-getter for the American League and the constant attention he receives due to his pursuit of Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak, which has stood for over fifty-years; the leading vote-getter for the National League, San Francisco Giant outfielder Barry Bonds, evaluates the type of season his team is having and his future goals in baseball; John Saunders interviews Philadelphia Phillie outfielder Lenny Dykstra, who comments on the damage the strike did to the game and his expectations coming into the all-star game; Lesley Visser interviews Kirby Puckett, an outfielder for the Minnesota Twins, about being a positive role model for kids and what has to be done to repair the damage created by the strike; Al Michaels talks with five-time National League batting champion, Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres; Tim McCarver and Jim Palmer discuss the reserve players and also some who should not have been left off the rosters; Lesley Visser talks with Cleveland Indian pitcher, Dennis Martinez, also known as "El Presidente," about his twenty years in the major leagues and whether the game still comes naturally for him; and the two managers for the all-star game, Buck Showalter of the New York Yankees and Felipe Alou of the Montreal Expos, review their prospective line-ups and any changes that will need to be made before game time.
