Summary
One in this daytime serial set in the fictional town of Bay City, Illinois. In this episode, Bay City residents attend the funeral of Jake McKinnon -- who is actually not dead. Plot developments include the following: prior to his arraignment for shooting his brother Grant, Ryan Harrison tells his lawyer, Greg Brady, that his earlier confession was a lie; Matt Cory refuses to attend the funeral, believing Paulina would not want him there; alive and well, Jake runs down the street where his funeral will take place, looking for the limo he hired; Amanda's young daughter Allie wants to stay home since Paulina would not want her there either; Rachel comforts widowed stepdaughter Paulina, who arrives at the empty church and meets friends of Jake's whom she never knew, like his barber and bookie; John and Sharlene Hudson, Cass, Frankie, and Morgan Winthrop, Lorna Devon, Marshall Lincoln Kramer III, Felicia Gallant, Maggie Cory, Tomas Rivera, Ian Rain, Josie Watts, Angela, and Donna Hudson, among others, arrive at the service; Morgan is hostile toward Lorna about her relationship with Grant and she leaves in a huff; Donna tells Paulina that Jake was a good friend, despite their differences, and they wish that Vicky could be there; Ryan tells his lawyer the person he was covering for did not commit the crime; Allie confides to Matt that she loved Jake and blames herself for his death; after Carl and Amanda arrive, Jake enters the church lobby and peeks through the window at the mourners; on Ryan's request, Brady rejects the efforts of prosecutor Dana Kramer to cut a deal; speaking to her dolls, Allie says she wished Jake dead on the night that he declared he would marry Paulina, and blames herself for her mother Amanda's impending divorce from Grant; Paulina gives the funeral eulogy, cataloging Jake's faults and nobler qualities; Vicky has a flashback about her and Jake as childhood friends, and surprises everyone by entering to pay her respects -- as she tells her mother, Donna, she did not shoot Grant; Ryan pleads not guilty at the arraignment; speaking to the funeral director, Jake calls himself "Mr. Eberhardt"; Paulina says goodbye to Jake's closed casket and Vicky insists that she act as a pallbearer; Allie packs a bag and runs away from home; Ryan is placed in a cell, his bail having been set at $300,000; in Nice, France, a mysterious countess -- seen from the back only -- is upset upon learning of Grant's shooting; Jake's funeral procession sets off, and Jake runs to the limousine carrying Paulina and Vicky and prepares to get in.
