DISNEY'S POCAHONTAS: THE MUSICAL TRADITION CONTINUES (TV)
Summary
This short documentary explores the music from four of the Disney Company's animated feature films: "Pocahontas," "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Aladdin." It includes comments from the song's composer and musicians, footage of the artists' recording sessions, and clips from the feature films. Host Alan Menken, who composed the music for all four films, opens the program, which goes on to highlight the music from each film individually. First, Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz talk about the story of "Pocahontas." Jon Secada and Shanice perform "If I Never Knew You" and comment on the song's meaning. Next, Menken says that his work with Disney began with "The Little Mermaid." He sings "Under the Sea" and describes that project. Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson then sing the title song of "Beauty and the Beast." Menken talks about the music for that film and describes the inspiration he drew from his colleague Howard Ashman. Menken, Bryson, and Dion comment on the song "Beauty and the Beast." Menken also sings "Be Our Guest" from the same film and discusses that song. For the film "Aladdin," Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle sing "A Whole New World." They talk about the song, and Menken also sings "Friend Like Me." Finally, Vanessa Williams sings "Colors of the Wind" from "Pocahontas." Schwartz, Menken, and Williams comment on that song. Includes commercials, promos, and a public-service announcement.
