CHICAGO HOPE: CUTTING EDGES (TV)

Summary

One in this series of medical dramas about the personal and professional lives of the staff of the state-of-the-art Chicago Hope Hospital and the ethical dilemmas they face. In this episode, the following events occur: Dr. Jeffrey Geiger visits his institutionalized wife Laurie -- who suffers from schizophrenia -- and she informs him that she wants a divorce so that she may marry Gilbert Weeks, a mentally disturbed fellow patient; inner-city doctor Dennis Hancock brings his patient, beautiful seventeen-year-old Tamara, to be examined by his friend Dr. Billy Kronk at Chicago Hope and it is discovered that she has a large cancerous tumor in one of her breasts and needs an immediate mastectomy; Geiger -- struggling with his still-strong feelings for his wife and his wish to have her back to the way she once was -- looks to his friend Dr. Aaron Shutt for answers as to how to help Laurie, whom he feels is making a drastic mistake with Gilbert; Shutt reluctantly brings up the idea of a new, radical surgical treatment for schizophrenia, which is ultimately a kind of high-tech lobotomy; Geiger, Laurie's legal guardian, suggests the operation to her and she agrees to it; Tamara, devastated by the news of her cancer, refuses to have her breast removed because she is afraid of disfigurement, and much to the surprise of Doctors Kronk and Infante, Hancock lets her leave the hospital and suggests she consult a faith healer if she does not wish to have surgery; Gilbert Weeks informs Geiger that he is taking him to court to remove him as Laurie's legal guardian because he does not want her to have an invasive procedure and believes Geiger wants to have her lobotomized as a reaction to her request for a divorce; chief-of-staff Phillip Watters goes to see Dr. Hancock because he feels it was negligent to let Tamara walk out of the hospital, but Hancock makes it clear that he knows what he is doing; Geiger and legal counsel Alan Birch go to court to challenge Gilbert's motion; Hancock has a heart-to-heart talk with Tamara; and Laurie Geiger has second thoughts about the brain surgery and her future. Commercials deleted. Includes scenes from recent episodes at the beginning of the program.
