CHICAGO HOPE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The pilot episode in this series of medical dramas about the personal and professional lives of the staff of the state-of-the-art Chicago Hope Hospital and the ethical dilemmas they face. In this episode, the legendary Dr. Arthur Thurmond is replaced by doctors Jeffrey Geiger and Aaron Shutt in order to finish a procedure in the operating room; Shutt treats an elderly patient who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor; and Geiger is assigned to head a surgery team that will attempt to separate conjoined twins. Matters become heated between Thurmond and the chief of surgery, Dr. Phillip Watters, when Watters tells Thurmond that he has scheduled a meeting with the executive board to determine whether Arthur is still competent to perform surgery. Shutt plans to try out a new device, an ultrasonic scalpel, on his patient. Besides worrying about his patient, Shutt learns that his wife Camille, who also works in the hospital, has filed for divorce. The day before the operation to separate the twins, Geiger is told that saving both of them is the objective., but he, along with the surgery team, know the slim odds of actually saving both. The executive board decides to grant a physical to Arthur and, at the same time, inform Geiger that they have voted against the separation procedure, which causes him to question the hospital's priorities: Are they economic or ethical?
