HERITAGE: CIVILIZATION AND THE JEWS, PART 2 : THE POWER OF THE WORD (TV)
Summary
Part two of this nine-part series, hosted by Abba Eban, which chronicles the origins, experiences, and contributions of the Jewish people. Utilizing examples of art, architecture, and writing from the period, part two focuses on the development of Jewish ideas and the words used to express their ideals, from the Babylonian Exile to life following the Roman destruction of Judea. Highlights include the following: the unfamiliar surroundings and strange customs Jews faced in exile in Babylonia; how Jewish identity was solidified during this period; the writing of the Torah, the first five books of the Bible; how the Persian Empire absorbed the remains of the Babylonian Empire in the sixth century B.C.; the return of many Jews to Jerusalem during this period; the century-long rebuilding process in Jerusalem; how the Jewish word and law was transferred from Babylonia to Jerusalem; the many ways the Jews were influenced culturally and spiritually while under the dominion of the Greek Empire; the Greek Empire's dissolution, leaving Syria in control of Judah; the Syrian attempt to oppress Jewish belief; the rebellion of the Macabees, who reclaimed the temple in Judea, allowing the Jewish tradition to triumph; how Jewish religious scholarship changed during this period; the Roman Empire's dominance of Judea with volatile King Herod, who was responsible for the architectural development of the city; the Jewish scholar Hillel's influence on religious thought; the brutal practice of crucifixion, which the Romans used to quell dissent; the titanic battle between Romans and Jews for the suzerainty of Jerusalem; the practice of ordaining rabbis, which began after the war was over; and how their life under the domination of Persians, Greeks, and Romans could not diminish the Jewish spiritual and moral beliefs.
