PICKET FENCES: MAY IT PLEASE THE COURT (TV)

Summary

One in this series of offbeat dramas that often focuses on social issues as it chronicles the lives of Rome, Wisconsin, residents, including town Sheriff Jimmy Brock; his wife Dr. Jill Brock; their three children, Kimberly, Matthew, and Zachary; and his two deputies, Kenny Lacos and Maxine Stewart. In this episode, Wambaugh and Littleton must go to Washington, D.C., to argue the case against suspected murderer Brian Latham in front of the Supreme Court. Wambaugh is clearly nervous about standing up in front of the highest court in the land, while Littleton wonders why this case would go to the Supreme Court at all, sensing that the justices may use the case to overturn a controversial law. Meanwhile, Jill finds out that Stacey agreed to be the surrogate mother for Carter's baby. Wambaugh is optimistic about winning the Latham case and he surprises Littleton with the amount of research he has done and the appointment he made with the renowned lawyer Alan Dershowitz. Stacey tells Carter that she cannot go through with having his baby and he is devastated; she asks Jill to recommend a doctor who performs abortions. Carter takes Stacey to court to see if she can be ordered to have the baby as her actions are a breach of contract. The night before the case is to be heard before the Supreme Court, Wambaugh and Littleton discuss their strategies of how to win. Though Wambaugh's opening argument does not start off the way he would have hoped, he recovers and gives a stirring speech, and Littleton fares even better than Wambaugh. Meanwhile, Carter's case against Stacey draws public outcry from people who are for abortion and those against it. After hearing Carter's remarks, Judge Bone makes a decision that does not exactly please Carter. At the prison, Wambaugh is telling Brian about what went on in Washington, when Kimberly interrupts them with a letter stating the ruling handed down by the Supreme Court. Commercials deleted.
